Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

The WBS focuses on prototype development of all three innovation goals plus use-case, training, and user-community work. Hardware procurement and 24×7 production operations are out of scope; both are deferred to the follow-on operations proposal.

Phase 1 — Prototype Development (Months 1–12)

WBS Work Package Lead
1.0 Platform Software Prototype (IaC, Kubernetes on Jetstream-2, PostgreSQL/DuckLake, CI/CD, validation) Roberts (Lead RSE)
2.0 AI/ML Prototype (Goal 3): vLLM, model evaluation, RAG, MCP framework, sandbox, multi-agent orchestration Roberts; GRA 1
3.0 Data Mesh Prototype (Goal 2, RENCI-led): zone analysis, policy-engine design & prototype, federation testing, Lakehouse–Mesh integration Russell (RENCI Co-PI); GRA 3 (ECE Security)
4.0 Lakehouse Prototype (Goal 1): schema, DuckLake/Iceberg prototype, time-travel versioning, query optimization, Iceberg/Parquet integration Cao (Co-PI); Choi; GRA 2 (CS DB)

Phase 2 — Science-Case and User-Community Maturation (Months 12–18)

WBS Work Package Lead
5.0 Use-Case Implementation: UC1 Agentic Discovery + Multi-Omics; UC2 Geospatial + EHT prototype pipeline; UC3 IoT prototype Roberts, Chism, Swetnam, Chan, Chen
6.0 Early-Adopter Onboarding: ESIIL, NCEMS, AIIRA; ACCESS-CI integration; TrustedCI prototype security review Chism, Swetnam, Edgin, Skidmore, GRA 3
7.0 Training & Documentation: technical docs, user training, 8 workshops, 8 Educator Fellows Chism, Jentner, GRAs

Phase 2 (continued) — Sustainability & Follow-On Proposal (Months 18–24)

WBS Work Package Lead
8.0 Empirical Hardware Specification & Cost Model: prototype benchmarking, hardware-spec derivation, cost-recovery model, follow-on proposal preparation Swetnam, Cao, Russell, Edgin
9.0 Best-Effort User Support & Community Growth: Tier-½ support, community engagement, ≥8 letters of support Project Ops Mgr, GRAs, Chism, all senior personnel

Critical Path

28 weeks of unbroken dependency in Phase 1:

  1. Weeks 1–6 — IaC template development (Roberts, Edgin)
  2. Weeks 3–10 — Kubernetes deployment on Jetstream-2 (Roberts, Edgin)
  3. Weeks 5–16 — PostgreSQL/DuckLake prototype (Choi, Cao, Roberts)
  4. Weeks 5–36 — vLLM / RAG / MCP prototype (Roberts, GRA 1)
  5. Weeks 2–24 — iRODS policy-engine prototype (Russell, RENCI RSEs, GRA 3)
  6. Weeks 24–48 — End-to-end Lakehouse–Mesh integration (Cao, Edgin, Russell)

Key Dependencies

  • All software prototypes (WBS 1.0–4.0) deploy on leveraged Jetstream-2 / CyVerse / UA HPC — no hardware-procurement dependency.
  • AI/ML prototype (WBS 2.0) depends on Kubernetes deployment (WBS 1.2) being available by Week 10.
  • Use-case implementation (WBS 5.0) depends on Phase 1 prototype completion (Month 12 milestone).
  • Early-adopter onboarding (WBS 6.0) depends on prototype validation (WBS 1.5).
  • Empirical hardware specification (WBS 8.0) depends on benchmarking against Phase 1–2 prototype performance.
